What is the number one complaint women have when they look in the mirror? Wrinkles! But you can, to some extent, do something about your wrinkles instead of just watching them happen. Avoid UV rays

Sunlight is vitally important for our well-being, but it can also cause our skin to age prematurely. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays break down, among other things, the elastin in our skin, which is the protein that keeps our skin supple, firm and resilient. The result? Slacking skin and wrinkle formation. You can postpone wrinkles and lines by protecting your skin from UV rays. Don’t bake in the sun for hours. And make sure you apply a UV filter day cream with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 20 every day, even in winter or when it’s cloudy!

Get prescription glasses

If you have bad eyes and need glasses, don’t postpone getting them because they make you feel old. Glasses are more important than you could imagine. They will stop you squinting to read or see things around you. Squinting causes you to crease the muscles in the corners of your eyes and forehead, and with time, those small lines will turn into frown wrinkles and crow’s feet. The solution? Head over to an optician today and get yourself a pair of trendy reading glasses or regular bifocals. Wouldn’t you rather have a cute pair of glasses than permanent wrinkles?

Mind what you eat

Eating well is important because skin needs moisture and plenty of good nutrition. Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants help prevent wrinkles and make the skin shine. Drink plenty of water and eat a good amount of fruits and veggies. Fresh salmon, avocado, linseed and beetroot are especially good for the skin. Alcohol, coffee, sugar and saturated fat are substances that are best avoided because they contribute to ageing skin.

Quit smoking

As we all know, smoking damages the lungs. This alone should be enough to get you to stop. Yet here is one more crucial reason to stop: smoking ages your skin tremendously. Nicotine constricts the blood vessels, slowing down circulation in the skin. What’s more, the enzyme released when smoking breaks down the skin’s connective tissue which keeps your skin taut and wrinkle free. So put down those cigarettes once and for all!

Exercise

We rarely forget to exercise our body muscles, but we greatly neglect our facial muscles. Hardly logical, is it? Facial exercising can help prevent wrinkles by stimulating the circulation in the skin. This strengthens the connective tissue and stimulates the production of collagen. Facial exercising also helps keep your facial muscles toned. This in turn prevents a double chin and sagging mouth corners. And if you think exercising your facial muscles is difficult, think again.
